How to compress images for Shopify without ugly quality loss

The job is not just to shrink a file. It is to keep the store fast while preserving product photos, banners and supporting visuals well enough to sell.

Recommended flow

1
Resize first to remove unnecessary pixels. Compression works better when you are not squeezing an oversized original.
2
For most content images, keep WebP in mind. For photo-heavy blocks, compare JPG and WebP visually instead of judging only by file size.
3
In Compress, lower quality gradually and inspect the real weak spots: text, fabric, sharp edges, logos and fine detail.
4
Do not convert transparent graphics to JPG unless you have a reason. PNG or WebP usually makes more sense there.

What to watch

A product gallery and a homepage banner rarely need the same file weight target.
Judge quality at the actual display size, not only at extreme zoom.
A slightly heavier clean image usually converts better than an aggressively compressed blurry one.

FAQ

What matters more: the smallest file or the cleanest image?

For commerce you need balance. Heavy images hurt speed, but dirty images hurt trust. Aim for the smallest file that still looks intentionally clean.

When should I choose PNG, WebP or JPG?

PNG and WebP are good for transparency and graphics; JPG and WebP are strong for normal photos. When unsure, compare WebP and JPG at real display size.
