How to prepare images for Instagram posts and stories quickly

The key is to choose the composition first and confirm the delivery size second. That gives you fewer accidental cuts and better control over the final frame.

Recommended flow

1
Decide whether the asset is a square post, a 4:5 feed image or a full-screen story or reel.
2
If the composition feels too loose or the subject is off-center, crop first. Resize should confirm the output size, not repair a weak composition.
3
In Resize, pick the matching preset and choose between Fill and Fit. Fill locks the canvas; Fit keeps the whole image visible.
4
Before exporting, check that important text, faces or product labels are not sitting too close to the edges.

What to watch

A 4:5 portrait usually gives more screen presence in the feed than a square.
For story-style layouts, keep key text away from the very top and bottom areas.
Build one strong master composition and branch square, feed and story variants from it.

FAQ

When should I use Fill and when should I use Fit?

Use Fill when the canvas size is mandatory and you can afford a slight crop. Use Fit when keeping the entire source image matters more than edge-to-edge coverage.

Do I need to crop before resizing?

Not always, but often yes. Crop handles composition; Resize handles delivery dimensions.
